Devil-Linux 1.2.12
Devil-Linux is a distribution which boots and runs completely from CDROM. The configuration can be saved to a floppy diskette or a USB pen drive. Devil Linux was originally intended to be a dedicated firewall/router but now Devil-Linux can also be used as a server for many applications. Attaching an optional hard drive is easy, and many network services are included in the distribution.
The system is designed to install without the use of a hard drive. It requires the use of a CDROM and a write-protected floppy. The CDROM provides the operating system, and the floppy provides the configuration information, via a tarball that is unpacked into the /etc directory. In this way, the system is fully configurable, yet the running system has no writeable device.

Advanced Linux Networking
With an increasing number of networks and mission-critical applications
running on Linux, system and network administrators must be able to do
more than set up a server and rely on its default configuration. Advanced
Linux Networking is designed to help you achieve a higher level of
competence. It focuses on powerful techniques and features of Linux
networking and provides you with the know-how you need to improve
server efficiency, enhance security, and adapt to new requirements.
This book begins with a brief introduction to low-level configuration,
including a guide to getting your network up and running. Part II outlines
those servers and procedures most likely to be used by the computers on
your local network: DHCP servers, Kerberos, Samba, time servers, and
network backups, among others. Part III covers Internet servers: DNS,
SMTP (sendmail, Postfix, and Exim), Apache, and FTP servers.

SLAX Standard Edition v 5.1.8.1

SLAX is fast and beautiful Linux operating system which fits on small (3.14″) CD-ROM disc. It runs directly from the CD (or USB) without installing. The Live CD described here is based on the Slackware Linux distribution and uses Unification File System (also known as unionfs), allowing read-only filesystem to behave as a writable one, saving all changes to memory.
. Why
Imagine the ability to boot your favorite Linux distribution whether you are at home, at school, or at work. Imagine walking on the street and carrying the only thing you needed in life - the 8cm compact disk with your Live Linux CD. Wouldn’t you want to experience such a feeling?
. How
When your computer boots from the LiveCD, the first step is loading the kernel image (vmlinuz). After this, a 4 MB ramdisk is created in the computer’s RAM. The rootdisk image (initrd.gz) is then unpacked into it and mounted as a root filesystem. Large directories (like /usr) are mounted directly from the CDROM.
. Bugs
I am still learning and I don’t know everything. If you find a bug or if SLAX does not work on your computer, contact me and I’ll try to fix it. If you have some interesting idea or if you know how to do things better than I did, tell me about it. I appreciate all kinds of feedback.
SLAX is available as an ISO image of the CD. It fits on small 8cm CD-R(W). Burn it with your favorite cd-writing software and then boot from the CD. You might want to check your BIOS to assure it’s set to boot the CD prior the disc. Read changelog and known bugs before downloading please.

Understanding the Linux Kernel by Daniel Plerre Bovet, Marco Cesati
In order to thoroughly understand what makes Linux tick and why it works so well on a wide variety of systems, you need to delve deep into the heart of the kernel. The kernel handles all interactions between the CPU and the external world, and determines which programs will share processor time, in what order. It manages limited memory so well that hundreds of processes can share the system efficiently, and expertly organizes data transfers so that the CPU isn’t kept waiting any longer than necessary for the relatively slow disks. The third edition of Understanding the Linux Kernel takes you on a guided tour of the most significant data structures, algorithms, and programming tricks used in the kernel. Probing beyond superficial features, the authors offer valuable insights to people who want to know how things really work inside their machine. Important Intel-specific features are discussed. Relevant segments of code are dissected line by line. But the book covers more than just the functioning of the code; it explains the theoretical underpinnings of why Linux does things the way it does. This edition of the book covers Version 2.6, which has seen significant changes to nearly every kernel subsystem, particularly in the areas of memory management and block devices. The book focuses on the following topics: *Memory management, including file buffering, process swapping, and Direct memory Access (DMA) *The Virtual Filesystem layer and the Second and Third Extended Filesystems *Process creation and scheduling *Signals, interrupts, and the essential interfaces to device drivers *Timing *Synchronization within the kernel *Interprocess Communication (IPC) *Program execution Understanding the Linux Kernel will acquaint you with all the inner workings of Linux, but it’s more than just an academic exercise. You’ll learn what conditions bring out Linux’s best performance, and you’ll see how it meets the challenge of providing good system response during process scheduling, file access, and memory management in a wide variety of environments. This book will help you make the most of your Linux system.
